Lycopene Is The Most Efficient Antioxidant


Lycopene has the highest antioxidant activity among all dietary carotenoids. It is very efficient in quenching single oxygen, scavenging free radicals to reduce oxidative stress and consequently providing protection against free radical mediated disease such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes. One molecule of lycopene is able to receive different excited state of the electronic energy.


The role of single oxygen can make the energy transfer to lycopene, the generation of oxygen molecules and triplet state of lycopene (1 O2 + lycopene → 3 O2 +3 lycopene), the triplet state Lycopene (3 lycopene) and solvent through a series of optical rotation and vibration reaction regeneration. Thus, a lycopene element can remove thousands of singlet oxygen. Carotenoids of quenching capacity is related to the number of the double bonds, hence lycopene is quenching singlet oxygen and removal of hydrogen peroxide and other free radicals as the most capable of carotenoids, inhibit destruction of singlet oxygen capacity is 2 times than that of β – Carotene (vitamin A relative)
